Faculty: Faculty of Medicine
Type: consecutive/non-consecutive (depending on your previous field of studies), research-oriented
Language of instruction: English
Starting date: only in winter semester (October)
Application period: 1 April - 31 May
Open to students with the undergraduate studies in:
- Consecutive programme: Bachelor oder equivalent in biochemistry, molecular biology, and closely related fields. International and domestic applicants welcome.
- Further education programme: medicine. Graduates of a degree programme in human medicine who have passed the first German medical examination can earn the title Master of Science in two semesters. This option is not recommended for those who hold a medical degree from a country other than the Federal Republic of Germany. Enrollment is only possible if applicants can prove the equivalency of their knowledge in those fields of natural science relevant to this master's programme
Programme summary: The Master of Science in Molecular Medicine primarily focuses on biomedical issues and examines them using methods and experimental approaches from the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and physiology. The skills acquired in this programme can be used in biomedical research and medical biotechnology. This degree programme meets the quickly growing need in the field of molecular and biomedical research for scholars with basic knowledge of medicine and natural science.
Extensive laboratory experiments, the goal of which is to teach students modern experimental methods, are a major part of this degree programme. In addition, students work at two or three different institutions and thus familiarize themselves with a variety of research methods currently in use. This part of the programme also trains the students' ability to independently apply the methods about which they have read in the course literature.
Special features: Particular emphasis will be placed on current research results in molecular pathology and molecular pharmacology. A wide range of specialized disciplines allows students to become familiar not only with the work in a clinic (through residencies at intensive care units and in other positions working with patients) but also with specific modern methods in molecular biology for pure and applied research.
Career opportunities: Graduates of the M.Sc. in Molecular Medicine will find an ever-expanding range of career opportunities available to them, including positions in biological research institutes, clinics, biotechnology companies, and state authorities.
One key area of work is pharmaceutical research. This branch is predicted to experience enormous growth in the near future. Based on innovative pure research results, entirely new substances are being used to treat neurodegenerative, oncological, infectious, and cardiovascular diseases. People with expertise taught in this degree programme are therefore urgently sought by companies in this field.
Physicians who earn the M.Sc. Molecular Medicine as an additional qualification create new career paths in clinical research. This includes intensive research during their postgraduate education (connected periods of research during their training to become a specialist), research positions with flexible working hours (100% independent research or 50% independent research and 50% clinical work), and other opportunities such as research groups or professorships.
Application requirements: A Bachelor of Science degree or a comparable academic qualification in the field of biochemistry, molecular biology, and closely related fields of at least three years' duration. In order to get an admission the applicant's bachelors degree shall be concluded above-average grades, equal to at least 2.5 or higher in the German university grading system. English language skilles at the level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (IELTS 5.0, TOEFL 80 IBT) highly recommended, a proficiency proof, however, is not mandatory. Only 30 students will be admitted each year. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of slots available, the selection procedure will be based on a ranking of specific criterias (grade point average, academic achievements, letter of motivation etc.).
Medical school graduates will receive credit for their previous studies in relevant disciplines.
