Open to students with undergraduate studies in: Bachelor oder equivalent in business administration or economics with at least 180 credit points (or which takes at least three years to complete)

Programme summary: The Master of Science in Economics teaches students the skills needed to thoroughly analyze economic issues and problems, understand and apply the relevant academic theory, and use the correct formal and empirical methods. This in turn will allow them to find creative approaches to problem solving and predict the political and social consequences of economic activity.

To this end, students will acquire profound knowledge in theoretically, empirically, and politically oriented economics as well as in one of the following specialization areas:

  • Innovation and Change
  • Economics and Strategy
  • World Economy
  • Public Economics
  • Quantitative Macroeconomics
  • Regional Dynamics
  • General Economics

At least 56 credits must be earned in the area selected. Each specialization area includes core courses that must be taken by all students and optional courses from which they may choose.

Special features: This programme can be completed in two years of full-time study. It includes basic courses, a specialization area, and a master's thesis. The basic courses include the following required courses:

  • Group Dynamics, Moderation, and Presentation
  • Empirical Methods
  • Approaches to Economic Science

The master's thesis must be written in the student's specialization area and should focus on one of the faculty's primary research topics.

Career opportunities: After graduating from this programme, students will be prepared for a variety of jobs and fields of work, including leading or advisory positions in banking, corporations, universities and research institutes, ministries, and private foundations.

Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent in business administration or economics that takes three years or more (full-time) and/or in which at least 180 credit points (according to the European Credit Transfer System) were earned. Your grade point average must be 2.5 or higher (German and US systems). At least 22 credits must have been completed in economics, 6 credits in mathematics, and 6 credits in statistics.

Alternatively, graduates from economics geography can gain admission to the programme if they meet academic requirements. Such admission is valid only for the specialisation "Reginal Dynamics" as part of an individual study curriculum.

Prospective students can check their proficiency with a self-assessment-test. The result is irrelevant for the application decition.

It is mandatory to show an English proficiency proof at the level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Most German applicants should be able to demonstrate this by submitting their high school diploma, which must contain proof of at least five years of high-school-level English classes.

Alternatively applicants can submit an official test score report from one of the following examinations:

  • Level B2
  • IELTS: 6.0
  • TOEFL: 90 (IBT)

or they submit a certificate by their university confirming that their previous study programme has been taught entirely in English.
