The year 2008 marks the Friedrich Schiller University Jena's 450 th birthday. Founded in 1558, it first provided an education in the humanities and later added natural science departments. Today, about 20.000 students study in the ten faculties at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena:

All buildings of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena are located in downtown Jena and are within a 15-minute walk. The only exception is the new Beutenberg Campus, which houses a number of high-tech departments of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena as well as private companies and independent research institutes in similar fields. This consolidation in one location allows for closer interinstitutional cooperation - from which students in these fields profit as well - and thus greater innovation.
